A quick stroll around the main street highlights flora and bird life of the area through paintings by local artists fixed to shop fronts.
The Little Desert
which stretches from the border to Dimboola, rates high in botanical significance and, in late spring, after good rains, features wildflowers and some orchids. More than 670 species of native plants have been recorded in the Little Desert , representing about one fifth of Victoria's indigenous flora. The eastern block contains extensive heathlands, with banksia, tea-tree and sheoak, and many spring flowering species.
Woodlands of Yellow and Red Gum with Slender Cypress-pines, and swamps and clay flats of Bull-oak and melaleuca are of particular interest in this area. Some twelve plant species are considered to be rare or significant.
In terms of birds, nearly 230 species have been recorded.
If you are on limited time, a visit around the 30 minute Billyho bush walk will give you a good indication of the Little Desert.
The book Birds and Plants of the Little Desert is a comprehensive guide and available for sale at Purple Starfish
