West Wimmera Take some time to discover West Wimmera. Travelling to Melbourne via the West Wimmera Touring Route. It is only an extra 30 minutes driving time, however it is one of the prettiest drives you'll take, even if you don't stop to take in the sites. In this itinerary. we have included some highlights south of Kaniva that we personally recommend and suggest at least an overnight stay.
Heading south, past the popular Lake Charlegrarklies Edenhope on Lake Wallace, featuring the Historic Courthouse (open 7 days, free entry). Also worth a visit is the Red Tail Gallery and Now Dach's a Gallery, Dachshund Museum. Edenhope Antiques is open 7 days. Apsleylies just 15 minutes east and is home to the 'art deco' Border Inn. Although the pub is presently closed for renovations, you can still free camp at the back of the pub and the Newlands Lake Nature Walk is worth while. Goroke Silo Art is a 40 minute drive south east from Kaniva and features artwork by renowned bird artist Geoffrey Carran.Nearby is the popular free camp of Lake Ratzcastle. Travelling toward Natimuk stop at the Jane Duff Memorial where a monument commemorates the iconic Australian 'Lost in the Bush' story. Mt Arapiles is a lovely scenic drive with campground nearby.
Further South of Kaniva Harrowis around 1 1/2 hours drive from Kaniva. It is a historic town on the banks of the Glenelg River. The Harrow Discovery Centre and the historic Hermitage Hotel are well worth a visit. Many main street buildings are well maintained and make for a pleasant walk. Low cost camping is available at the Johnny Mullagh Reserve.
Baileys Rocks are 1 1/2hr hour's south of Kaniva. They are a series of ancient granite boulders in a dry creek bed within the northern section of Dergholm State Park.It is a very pretty area for a day trip or overnight camp. At Baileys Rocks campground, there are well maintained toilets, firepits, picnic tables, drinking water and two walking tracks. Nearby is Bilston's Tree, an 800 year old River Red Gum and the Pub in the Scrub (open 7 days) is renowned for its wood fired pizzas.
